Anatolian Shepherd Dog.

Anatolian Shepherd Dog breeds are Turkish native large dog. They were originally bred to be a companion for shepherds and livestock guardians. They were bred with traits resembling the livestock they guarded to protect the flock from predators.

The working ancestors are believed to have been present for at least 6,000 years. Wandering tribes in central Asia brought the first mastiff-type dog to the region that is now Turkey. Sighthound breeds from the southern regions also contributed to the Anatolian’s agility and detached character.

The Anatolian Shepherd is a furry guard dog. They possess the traits and characteristics that a rancher or farmer would want in a livestock guardian. Moreover, they are intelligent, capable, independent, and able to make decisions for their flock. They are large, intimidating, graceful, and can run up to 30 mph. In 1996, the breed was accepted into the American Kennel Club Miscellaneous class. In August 1998, it was moved to the Working Group.

Catahoula Leopard Dog.

The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog is thought to have originated in North Central Louisiana, near Catahoula Lake. It is also known as the Catahoula Hound. This dog is considered a descendant of the Native American Dogs from the area. The original name of the dog was the Catahoula Cur. However, it was made the official state dog of Louisiana in 1979. The American Kennel Club has not designated this breed as a herder. However, the breed was used for hunting wild boards in its native area. This is particularly interesting.

They were originally used to track all kinds of wildlife, including hogs, black bears, mountain lions, and smaller animals like raccoons and squirrels. Louisiana’s “hogdog” is a mix of Spanish Mastiffs and native American dogs. Catahoulas were designed to drive feral cattle and hogs when it was time for butchering.
